Marksie's Remarks

When tasked with creating any type of item adorned with your logo, whether it's a brochure, Web site or even a lapel pin, you have to ask yourself, what makes a design good? Better yet...what makes a design great?

Whether you realize it or not, the design you put forth is a direct representation of you and your company. We take great care in how we present ourselves in our dress, attitude and the way we articulate, so it makes perfect sense that we put just as much, if not more, effort into the design of goal-driven collateral and communication/marketing pieces.

As you know, we at Intra-Media Solutions have gone through a recent logo and brand change (we were Intraform for 18 years), and currently we are updating the logo on our various printed, Web and promotional items. While I have a plethora of design options to choose from (thanks Kat and RJ), I decided to do some homework on my own to uncover some of the trade secrets in achieving great design.

In today's world, I think we all can agree that when it comes to design, marketing and communication efforts, it's all about driving traffic. So how do we do that? With busy and chaotic graphics? With the most expensive designer? Absolutely not. Success relies on a great offer, and a compelling call to action supported by a "clean" design that you can stand behind. "Clean" can be described in the following ways:

  1. Attention grabbing
  2. Succinct
  3. Convincing
  4. Memorable
  5. Like a nice fresh perfume -- lightly spritzed rather than marinated
  6. Graphically representative of your unique story
  7. Defining
  8. Simple yet sophisticated

So clearly, it is important to capture a design that not only embodies your company's personality and characteristics, but most importantly, does so in a clean way. Simply stated, a great design is like a fine wine. It should leave you wanting more rather than spraying it across the table at your unsuspecting fellow diner. (That sounded brilliant and a bit more poetic in my mind, but you get the point.) If you can let your own taste and a commitment to cleanliness be your guide, you can most definitely achieve great design that will hit a homerun with your target audience.
